Hyakkiyako Exhibition of Mizuki Shigeru

2022.7.8 [Fri] - 9.4 [Sun]

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mizuki Shigeru’s birth, we are holding an exhibition where you can fully enjoy Mizuki Shigeru’s world of yokai (traditional Japanese monsters, ghouls, and goblins) set against the backdrop of spectacular panorama offered by the Tokyo City View. This exhibition unravels the mysteries of how these Japanese ghouls depicted by the artist came to be. Mizuki’s own collection of yokai-related materials, including Gazu Hyakki Yagyo (“The Illustrated Night Parade of a Hundred Demons”) by Toriyama Sekien, an Edo period painter, and Yokai Dangi (“The Monologue of the Monsters”) by Yanagita Kunio, a folklorist from the early Showa period will be on display for the first time. In keeping with the name “Hyakki Yagyo,” over one hundred of Mizuki’s own yokai illustrations will also be on display at this exhibit. We hope that through this exhibition, you will feel more familiar with the yokai of Japan, by seeing how Mizuki came to terms with and depicted these ghoulish figures through intenstive research, firmly entrenching the yokai culture into the world of modern Japan.
